Golden State Warriors had all they needed to celebrate their fourth NBA champion**** in eight years this week thanks to some high-minded treats.

Beyond the pride in once again securing the NBA’s coveted title, the California team was gifted a special present from a regional well-wisher, Newspostalk reports.

The celebratory goodie bag contained two prerolls, gummies, mini-joints, a topical recuperation gel and a T-shirt from San Francisco-based cannabis company Sunset Connect.

“True to our roots, we worked the local angles to give our champions a goody bag,” CEO Ali Jamalian said, per Bharat Express News. “We wanted the team to go on vacation with real city fire.”

The Warriors, which includes superstar Stephen Curry and Canadian standout Andrew Wiggins, bested the Boston Celtics by a score of 103-90 last week to take home the prize.

Champion recipients can likely feel comfortable partaking of the skunky gifts, given that the NBA season is now over and, if the approach of the last few years holds, players may not be subject to random cannabis testing.

It’s not clear if the gift of cannabis is a first for a sporting champion. The practice of including cannabis-related goodies, though, has certainly been done in past on the movie and television awards circuit.

For winners and also-rans at the Academy Awards in 2021, weed-themed offerings inside the gift bags reportedly included Hollowtips 24K gold vape cartridges, Elixinol’s Good Night CBD capsules, FIRE/ICE High-Performance Hemp Salve by Fifth Element and SalTerrae Hemp Intimate Oils.

There were plenty of other goodies included, making for a hefty haul for winners and nominees alike.

“The companies we are featuring embrace diversity, inclusion, health and philanthropy and are giving back to their communities and the world at large in significant ways,” Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary said of the “Everyone Wins” bags.

Weed-wise, the Oscar goodie bags in 2020 provided a “one-of-a-kind cannabis-infused chocolate culinary experience” worth $10,000, syrup to make CBD drinks, essential oils and gold-plated vape pens.

The Fresh Toast reported the 2019 bags included cannabis-infused edibles, topicals and concentrates, cannabis facial moisturizer and cannabis facial oil and an annual VIP member**** to MOTA, Los Angeles’ first weed-friendly social club.

The value of the gift bags has made headlines in years past, reportedly amounting to US$100,000 for the awards in 2019 and US$225,000 in 2020.

But it’s not just sports and movies that have joined the pot party. In 2018, BudTrader.com announced in August of that year that the platform would be providing a swag bag full of high-end cannabis goodies and gadgets to celebrities at the EcoLuxe gift lounge in Los Angeles.

Lucky nominees for what BudTrader referred to as “a major awards show” received curated bags jam-packaged with cannabis, CBD and hemp products, along with related gifts and gadgets.

“This is a historic moment for the entire cannabis community,” BudTrader CEO Brad McLaughlin said in a statement. “The tide has turned, the green rush is happening and this is the new normal.”

Both medicinal and recreational cannabis is legal in California. Adults 21 and older can purchase legal weed and grow up to six cannabis plants at home.

The Law Office of Vikas Bajaj notes that “generally speaking, gifting marijuana is legal. However, you’ll have to make sure that you keep your gift within the boundaries of the law,” or chance possible criminal charges.

Get Nugg reports that a person with weed and looking to share is “only allowed to give away up to an ounce at a time.”

The gift of weed, however, has not gone over quite as smoothly in other legal states. In newly legal New York, the Office of Cannabis Management there sent cease and desist letters to more than two dozen businesses suspected of “gifting” and illegally selling bud this past February.

Ganja gifters, though, have shown ingenuity. One contractor with Dreamy DC makes weed deliveries for what she calls the motivational speech company. The longer the speech, the more so-called inspiration a customer receives for a price.

Also in Washington, D.C., customers can receive a special “gift” if they purchase an original art piece by the resident artist, Sudo the dog.
