There will be an Appeals Process

Players are now able to report chat messages in multiplayer games using the new system, but the community is concerned about the consequences.

Mojang's community manager said that the company is not going to alter its controversial player reporting feature . He also demanded that the harassment stop of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit MojangMeesh clarified while the company appreciates feedback from its players, it doesn't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the upcoming reporting system". They also asked players who are upset to stop "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to harass them in unrelated threads. The comment has received nearly 2000 downvotes as of writing.

Minecraft players have been arguing about the new player report system since it was announced just a month ago and was then implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on both private and Mojang-hosted servers to flag inappropriate messages in chat to be reviewed by Mojang investigators, potentially resulting in suspensions and bans for players who violate Minecraft's community guidelines even on servers hosted by a third party. Many gamers are concerned that this system could result in bans on players for messages that were taken out of context, and, more generally, that it gives Microsoft too many powers to control the content on its platform.

I don't think their argument is unfounded even if a few players are displaying a terrible attitude about it. It's difficult to imagine a world where this system doesn't disqualify someone for making a joke between friends. There will be an appeals process however it's also true that there are many misconceptions floating around about how the system actually works. Browse through any discussion about the subject and it won't take long before you find people complaining about having their private server's chat being'monitored' by Microsoft, or worried that they'll get banned for cursing. Neither of these is possible, according to Mojang's FAQ regarding the reporting system.

This is the area where Mojang is stuck. A thread by Stuart Duncan-who manages an autism-friendly Minecraft server for children with autism-shows just how much awful stuff Minecraft is host to on a regular basis. Duncan highlights studies and reports from the ADL as well as the BBC, and others that recount the stories of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. The provision of tools to combat that behaviour seems important. While it's true that "think of the children' scare stories get used to justify repressive policies in real life and a tool that lets users report chat messages that aren't legitimate in Minecraft isn't exactly the thin end of a severe wedge.

Please stop trying to speak for everyone when you say "no one has asked for this" or "the whole community is against it" or "no one needs this. "If you are worried about exploitation, that's excellent. That's me too. It's not perfect however, real people can be saved by it. Just another blog or something July 27, 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang has declared that the game wouldn't include NFTs because they don't align with the "values of inclusion in the creative process". The move at least received enthusiastic support from the playerbase but there's been no information yet about what the AI they've developed to play Minecraft thinks about it.

One of Josh's earliest memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer when he was far too young to be doing this and he's been irreparably game-trained since then. Since the time, his writing has been featured in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times. He's a fan of almost anything, and has written far too much on everything from visual novels to Assassin's Creed. His biggest passions are CRPGs and immersive sims. He thinks you're all far too harsh about Deus Ex: Invisible War.
