Minecraft YouTube Videos have been Watched 47bn Times

Adults and kids alike aren't playing Minecraft in their millions: they're watching YouTube videos made using Minecraft and they are receiving billions of views.

Octoly, an online video provider has released a study that aims to quantify this. It states that Minecraft videos were viewed 30.8 billion times as of June 2014. Only 183 million of those views were from Mojang, Mojang's publisher.

This is almost three times the amount of views for Grand Theft Auto videos. Octoly estimates that Grand Theft Auto was the second most-watched gaming brand on YouTube with more than 12 billion views. It was ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 Billion), Angry Birds (6 Billion) and Halo (4.8 Billion).

According to the company, Minecraft videos have been viewed an additional 16 billion times since June, bringing its total to 47.4 billion views. Octoly has explained that Octoly360 discovered 81,000 YouTube creators discussing Minecraft in June. "Today there are 147,000 creator channels featuring Minecraft videos, almost double."

Anyone who has been following Minecraft and/or the evolution YouTube over the past few years will not be shocked to see Minecraft so far ahead of its competitors.

Tubefilter released a chart that lists the top 100 YouTube channels for September 2014. It utilized data from analytics company OpenSlate to reveal that Stampy was a child-friendly Minecraft channel was the third most popular with 189.6 million views.

Popular channels with an extensive or complete Minecraft focus were also popular in September, like Vegetta (8th in the world with 164 million views in September) as well as The Diamond Minecart (10th place with 161.8 million players).

Mojang has supported its YouTube community since the beginning of Minecraft and has avoided copyright disputes with video creators and avoiding any interference to the content of their videos.

"We have a lot of people who are making their entire income making videos about Minecraft. Just the economics of that and how many people are making a living off this one IP is pretty amazing," Mojang's chief operating officer Vu Bui told the Guardian in October.

"That does not mean anything to anyone, and I would argue that it adds value to Minecraft the experience to see people who are extremely skilled at doing things. We've basically outsourced YouTube videos to a vast community of people and what they come up with is more creative than anything we could create ourselves."

YouTube is a large factor in the reason that Minecraft is such a strong well-loved and popular gaming brand in 2014 - and it's also a notable reason behind Microsoft's decision to purchase Mojang for $2.5bn this summer.

Microsoft isn't just buying a popular game that's sold over 54 million copies across computer, console and mobile it's buying one the largest television brands in the world. Strongcraft Despite its immense popularity online, it's not on television in the traditional sense.
