Children to design new national park in Minecraft

Students in Adelaide, Australia, have been asked to design an Australian national park using Minecraft which could then be constructed in real life.

Students aged nine to twelve were asked to design their own 3D models within the world.

The results could be used in improvements to existing national parks around Adelaide.

The government has set aside $10.4m Australian dollars (PS5.4m) for the redesigns.

It was eager to discover a way to involve young people in its process.

"This competition is part an engagement project with the community that asks people all ages what facilities would encourage them spend more time in the national park," reads the Natural Resources, Adelaide website which announced the prize.

"The State government has set aside $10.4m for park projects, so some of the ideas you and your class comes up with could be put to use."

The only rule is that a design must be possible to be realized in the real world.

"The park's features should be a part of the natural surroundings by taking into consideration the species of animals and plants that live there."

Ideas could include trails for mountain biking, bushwalking or horse riding, barbecues and picnic areas - or something completely different." it suggested.

    Redesigning the slums

There is a rising trend to create more ambitious Minecraft designs.

As part of an educational program as part of an educational project, the Danish government has created a map of the entire country.

Mojang the creators and developers of Minecraft, teamed with the UN in 2012 to help create cities in the developing world.

They recreated public spaces through the game and then shared it with community groups where they could design the spaces.

The project has prompted new ideas for green areas in Kiberia (the largest slum in Nairobi) and was used to design a new waterfront for Les Cayes, Haiti's largest city.

The Adelaide competition will close on June 12, and the winner will be announced a month later.

The winners will be awarded an excursion funded by the government to the Belair National Park.
