Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to stop Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a firm stance against NFTs. In a blog post entitled "Minecraft and NFTs," the studio, which is owned by Microsoft and Microsoft, stated that "integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we would accept or support."

"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our server and client applications, nor may Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds, persona items, or any other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," Mojang said.

Mojang claims that several companies have created "NFT Implementations that go along with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could potentially earn NFTs through playing on servers or by earning them outside of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that these practices promote digital exclusion and scarcity, which is contrary to Minecraft's values. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a semblance of the haves and have-nots," the studio said. Mojang adds that NFTs are speculative and "encourages profiteering."

I strongly suggest that you read the blog post in full because it concisely spells out many criticisms of NFTs and blockchain projects in language that's simple to comprehend. (There are many more quotes I could include.

Valve has also taken a hard stance against blockchain-based games and NFTs on Steam and a large portion of gamers have disapproved of NFTs as well, and Ubisoft stopped making NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint just a few months after it launched the initiative. Epic Games stated last year that it is "open" to blockchain-based games on Epic Games Store. Kirn The store received the first blockchain-based game in June.

Mojang does not completely exclude the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the near future. However, it says that "we are not planning to implement blockchain technology into Minecraft right at this time."
