    The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding which is enjoyed by all.

    The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

    The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists also attended.

    The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

    Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the dream of altering the way of transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join existing bike pathways in the city, as well as those that are paved throughout the city’s neighborhoods to encourage cycling among its residents and its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem.”

    The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located to the west of the city.
