The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding which is enjoyed by all.

The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

נווה פריצקי The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists also attended.

Jerusalem’s rich past was the main reason for it to be the most visited tourist destination during the time of its glory. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historical treasures the modern tourist industry is included in the Jerusalem city. “The opening of this tunnel is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. It transforms the city into an attractive tourist destination for all types of audience throughout Israel and around the world.”

Elkin, who heads the project along with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in the city’s tourism growth and the development of innovative activities and ventures that tie the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. I would like to invite cyclists everywhere to take a trip and enjoy the contemporary, well-maintained road that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem.

The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the dream of altering the way of transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join existing bike pathways in the city, as well as those that are paved throughout the city’s neighborhoods to encourage cycling among its residents and its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem.”

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located to the west of the city. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel. It includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing projects to ensure the tunnel is safe for all year.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as well as the natural springs of historical significance Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
