    The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that is a loop around the capital.

    The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza route. Its southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

    The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

It will also be made paved in its different areas. The tunnel will be a great way to help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

    In the late 1990s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now utilized as an infrastructure tunnel. It houses the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

    Road construction, installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just some of the ongoing projects to ensure the tunnel is safe throughout the year.

    The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation spots which include the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium, and the historical natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
