    The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.

    The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital city.

    The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as many cyclists.

    Jerusalem’s rich past was the main reason that it was the most visited tourist attraction during the time of its glory.     Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

    Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to transform the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as those that will paved in the neighborhoods. It is intended to encourage biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green transport revolution in the capital.”

    The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

    The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.
