The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital city.

נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin stated that, in addition to its rich history, modern tourism is also included in the city of Jerusalem. “The opening of this tunnel project is a further part of the expansion of the city of Jerusalem and its transformation into an attractive tourist destination for all kinds of visitors in Israel as well as around the globe.”

Elkin his ministry, which spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry invested hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the city’s tourism development as well as in creating new activities and ventures that will connect the magnificent historical past and future of Jerusalem. It is now utilized as an infrastructure tunnel and is also home to the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.
