The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.

The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. נווה פריצקי This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entrance is beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also in attendance.

Elkin who, through his ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels each year in the development all aspects Jerusalem’s tourists and in the design and operation of innovative attractions, ventures , and other attractions that connect the glorious history of Jerusalem’s eternal city to its future”. Around NIS 25 million was invested in the project. It was budgeted by the Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, and the work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the vision of altering the way of transport throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths within the city, as well as the ones that will be paved within its various neighborhood. It is designed to encourage bicycle riding among its residents, and promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem.”

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Current work includes road construction, installation blowers, and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe to use all year.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to a variety of recreational sites, such as Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
