    The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.

    As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that runs around the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

    The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

    The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

    Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin said that the present tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem’s treasures from the past and is also a part of modern-day tourism. “The launch of the tunnel project [is] another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. It transforms Jerusalem into an attractive tourist place for any kind of crowd within Israel and around the world.”

    נווה פריצקי Elkin’s ministry, which also in charge of the project together in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels annually in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and in creating innovative attractions and ventures, which connect the glorious historic history of our capital city with the future.” I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a the modern, well-maintained cycling route overlooking the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem.

    The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

    Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the idea to change the way of thinking and transport in Jerusalem. Elkin stated that the new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout the various neighborhoods. It will also help cyclists and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

    The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

    The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers and advanced safety and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.

    Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to exclusive recreation areas like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical aquarium and zoo and also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
